Catfish are strong, so you’ll need a medium to a heavy-weight rod, six to seven feet in length. Likewise, you’ll need some strong line, and a reel that can handle it. You’ll also need a weighted, fish-shaped jig, to not only attract the catfish’s attention, but to also get it down to the bottom of the water.

Finally, you’ll need smelly bait; catfish are predators, and smaller fish, such as shad or minnows, work well. Cut bait is good when the water is moving. However, the whole bait is better when the water is moving slow.

Reeling One In

The most important thing is to make the bait and jig look realistic; shaking and jiggling should help attract their attention. Likewise, an extra hook on the end of the bait will increase your chance of successfully hooking a catfish.

The size, weight, and strength of a catfish can make it hard to reel them in; reel them in with a slow, steady pressure, allowing space for the catfish to move. Don’t reel them in too quickly, you don’t want to put too much pressure on your line.

Be Careful Handling a Catfish

Watch out for the fins, the pectoral and dorsal fins can have sharp spines. Likewise, the fins of some catfish contain a mild toxin that can cause swelling and irritation if you puncture your skin. Use a net, and be very careful when handling a catfish.

Bringing Your Catch Home

Clean the fish with clear water, pat it dry, wrap it in plastic and store it over ice for the drive home.
